You should always carefully plan your storage for protection and to save storage space. Below are some helpful suggestions for storage of your personal items. Packing and labelling cartons room by room makes the unpacking much easier. As a general rule, place heavy items at the rear of the shed. Then work forwards and upwards with lighter items.
Fridges & Freezers
Defrost, dry and clean before storing. Leave door slightly ajar and place deodoriser inside.
washing machines
Drain water from hoses and tape them to the back of the machine.
furniture
Where possible remove legs and tape to underside. Stand on end and protect with drop sheets.
Mattresses should be wrapped in plastic.
clothing & linen
Pack in secure cartons or plastic with mothballs or similar product.
Seal all cartons.
dishes & glasses
Individually wrap in packing paper and pack in strong cartons, marked ‘Fragile’.
Fill any gaps in the cartons with packing.
books & magazines
Pack flat, not on their spine in cartons.
mirrors & artworks
Wrap in bubble wrap or flat pack cartons. Store them standing on their edge in an upright position.
metal items
Wrapping silver in non acid tissue paper or plastic bags can help reduce tarnishing.
Wipe chrome or cast iron with a little oil to help reduce rust.
entertainment systems
Use original cartons if possible, alternatively wrap items individually in bubble wrap and pack in strong cartons.
Pack out any gaps in the cartons. Always secure turntables and tone arms of record players.
computers
Pack as for entertainment systems. Back-up hard disk before storing.
battery operated appliances
Remove batteries to avoid damage from leaking batteries.
mowers & machinery
Drain fuels and oil from the machinery.
tools
These can be stored in an empty rubbish bin or in secure cartons.
Wipe with a little oil to prevent rust.
